Bangladesh Holds General Elections as Voting Gets Underway
The stage is set for general elections in Bangladesh as polling is underway across the country with the participation of 50 political parties.
More than 127 million voters are expected to cast their ballots in elections being held in 299 constituencies nationwide. Polling began at 7:30 am local time and will continue until 4:30 pm.
Candidates from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, National Citizen Party, Jatiya Party, and several other political groups are contesting for 300 parliamentary seats. To form the government, a party must secure a simple majority of 151 seats in the National Parliament.

Former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s son, Tarique Rahman, is the prime ministerial candidate of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, while Shafiqur Rahman is considered a strong contender for the office from Jamaat-e-Islami.
