China Sets 2030 Target to Grow Tea Industry to $216 Billion
China has issued new guidelines to accelerate the upgrading of its tea industry, setting a goal for the total size of the full industrial chain to reach 1.5 trillion yuan (about 216 billion U.S. dollars) by 2030.
The guidelines, jointly released by five government departments including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, aim to significantly enhance the quality and efficiency of the sector. By 2030, China plans to establish a tea industry system that is well-supplied, environmentally friendly, technologically advanced, and globally competitive.
The plan includes 2028 interim targets focused on steady growth in major traditional tea-producing regions and improving the quality and efficiency of distinctive local tea industries. It also calls for industry-chain modernization, a wider range of products, and expanded consumption scenarios.
Key tasks outlined in the guidelines include strengthening scientific and technological innovation, supporting market entities, and developing specialized industry clusters. The plan encourages expanding the use of tea raw materials and components in areas such as home products, daily chemicals, cosmetics, and health care.
China, recognized as the birthplace of tea, has a millennia-long tradition of tea culture, with tea remaining an essential part of daily life for its people.
