Chinese FM Wang Yi Visits Sri Lanka, Reaffirms Strategic Partnership and Disaster Support

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made a stopover in Sri Lanka on Monday during his return from a trip to Africa, holding a cordial meeting with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, expressed China’s swift assistance to Sri Lanka following the recent devastating cyclone. He voiced confidence that the Sri Lankan people would soon overcome the disaster and rebuild their homes.

China is also keen to enhance exchanges of governance experience with Sri Lanka, expand practical cooperation across multiple sectors, facilitate people-to-people interactions, and further deepen the strategic cooperative partnership rooted in mutual assistance and lasting friendship, Wang said. He highlighted the goal of jointly building a China-Sri Lanka community with a shared future.

Addressing the current global situation, Wang emphasized that China will defend the legitimate rights of developing nations, particularly small and medium-sized countries, uphold the UN Charter and international law, and work with like-minded countries to oppose power politics, resist all forms of bullying, and defend multilateralism, fairness, and justice.

Wang also thanked Sri Lanka for its continued adherence to the one-China principle and reaffirmed China’s support for Sri Lanka in pursuing development aligned with its national conditions. He called for strengthened regional cooperation in South Asia and joint efforts to promote a fairer and more equitable global governance system.
