Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi cautioned against “knee-jerk” calls for the United States
MUNICH : Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi cautioned against “knee-jerk” calls for the United States to distance itself from China and highlighted that, despite some positive signals from the White House, certain US voices were undermining bilateral relations.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Wang Yi called for a “positive and pragmatic” US policy toward China, saying co-operation represents the best outcome for both nations.
Wang Yi met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday in what a US official described as a “positive and constructive” meeting. Discussions included a planned visit to Beijing by US President Donald Trump in April. After a year of turbulence over trade and tariffs, China said it was encouraged by recent White House statements showing “respect for President Xi Jinping and the Chinese people.”
The United States and European countries have expressed growing concern over dependence on China for raw materials and critical components in manufacturing supply chains, prompting calls to reduce reliance. Wang Yi warned that some in the US were actively seeking to attack and smear China and suggested that bilateral relations face two possible trajectories.
