CNN, SIGAR Warn US Weapons Left in Afghanistan Fuel Terrorism in Pakistan
Islamabad: US broadcaster CNN and the head of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) have warned that American weapons left behind in Afghanistan following the US withdrawal are being used in terrorist attacks inside Pakistan, significantly undermining counterterrorism efforts.
According to a CNN report, US military equipment abandoned in Afghanistan has become a major obstacle in Pakistan’s fight against terrorism. Militant groups, including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), are reportedly using US-manufactured rifles, machine guns, and sniper weapons in their operations.
The report noted that the availability of advanced American weaponry has led to a noticeable increase in both the intensity and lethality of terrorist attacks, enabling militants to carry out more sophisticated assaults.
Separately, SIGAR head John Sopko stated that approximately 300,000 American weapons were left behind in Afghanistan at the time of the US withdrawal. He confirmed that modern US arms abandoned during the exit have been used in terrorist attacks in South Waziristan and Balochistan.
Pakistan has repeatedly raised the issue with the Afghan authorities and the international community, providing what it describes as clear evidence that Afghan soil is being used for terrorism against Pakistan. Islamabad has maintained that TTP militants are using modern US-made weapons left behind in Afghanistan to carry out cross-border attacks.
Pakistani officials have consistently warned that the continued circulation of these weapons poses a serious threat to Pakistan’s internal security and regional stability, calling for concrete international action to address the issue.
