Diplomats Meet Again in Vienna to Discuss Iran’s Nuclear Developments
The ambassadors of Iran, Russia, and China to international organizations in Vienna have conducted another round of discussions on recent developments related to Iran’s nuclear program.
Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s permanent representative, confirmed on X that the three countries held trilateral consultations on issues concerning Iran’s nuclear activities.
The representatives have held multiple rounds of meetings on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, including a joint session with Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Iran has faced intense economic pressure amid Western claims regarding its nuclear activities, which are closely monitored by the UN nuclear watchdog.
Prior to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the West treated Iran’s nuclear dossier as a security threat, imposing sanctions and threatening military action. Following the resolution of the so-called possible military dimensions (PMD) in 2015, these claims were left without basis.
After signing the JCPOA, Iran adhered to its obligations. However, the United States withdrew from the deal unilaterally, and European parties failed to uphold their commitments. Consequently, Iran gradually reduced its compliance under the rights guaranteed in the JCPOA.
Efforts to revive the deal in 2021 were unsuccessful due to delays and high demands from Western parties.
Iran continues to maintain technical contacts with the IAEA as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement (CSA), expressing readiness to reach a durable agreement that would ensure sanctions are lifted.
