EU to Resume Trade Agreement Ratification With U.S. After Tariff Threats Dropped

BRUSSELS :The European Union is set to resume ratification of a trade agreement with the United States after former President Donald Trump abandoned threats to impose tariffs on European goods over disputes concerning Greenland.

European Union lawmakers had previously suspended the ratification process, but European Parliament President Roberta Metsola confirmed that Washington’s withdrawal of tariff threats now allows the procedures to continue. A preliminary vote is expected in the coming days, according to Metsola.

The situation eased following Trump’s meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos, where agreements were reached on the deployment of U.S. missiles and mineral extraction rights in Greenland to limit Chinese influence in the Arctic region.

Despite these developments, some European lawmakers remain cautious. Trade Committee Chairman Bernd Lange warned that “there is no room for false security” and noted that further clarification on the Greenland agreements is required before final approval. The trade deal has previously faced criticism over perceived unequal export taxation conditions.
