Foreign Minister Says Kashmir Dispute Hinges on UN Resolutions

Pakistan has reaffirmed its firm and unwavering support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir on the eve of Kashmir Solidarity Day, reiterating its commitment to their just struggle for the right to self-determination.

In a message issued on Tuesday, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan said that despite prolonged illegal Indian occupation and continued deprivation of fundamental rights, the resilience of the Kashmiri people stands as clear testimony to the legitimacy of their cause.

The statement noted that the core of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute remains India’s failure to implement United Nations Security Council resolutions that guarantee the Kashmiri people a free and impartial plebiscite. It said India’s continued defiance undermines the UN Charter, relevant Security Council resolutions, and the Fourth Geneva Convention.

Highlighting the situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), the Foreign Minister said that human rights violations have evolved from isolated incidents into a sustained system of repression. Since the unilateral and illegal actions of August 5, 2019, India has dismantled legal safeguards, weakened local institutions, and introduced measures aimed at consolidating permanent occupation of the disputed territory.

The message said these measures include attempts to artificially alter the demographic composition of the region by turning the Muslim majority into a minority, imposing restrictions on media freedom by enforcing official narratives, and criminalizing dissent. It further noted that under a Hindutva-driven framework, Kashmiris face constant discrimination.

The statement also expressed concern over what it described as institutionalized Islamophobia, citing recent profiling of mosques in IIOJK where religious functionaries are reportedly being compelled to provide personal details, photographs, and sectarian affiliations.

According to the message, grave human rights violations — including fake encounters, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, and curbs on fundamental freedoms — continue unabated. It referenced recent observations by UN experts highlighting the arbitrary detention of nearly 2,800 individuals, including journalists, students, and human rights defenders.

The Deputy Prime Minister urged the international community to take decisive action to address the deteriorating human rights situation in IIOJK, ensure accountability for India’s illegal and unilateral actions, press India to implement UN Security Council resolutions, and allow Kashmiris their promised right to self-determination.

The message concluded by reaffirming that Pakistan will continue to stand with the Kashmiri people politically, morally, and diplomatically, and will remain committed to securing a peaceful and lasting resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
