Gaza Death Toll Rises to 72,070 Since October 2023

The death toll in the Gaza Strip has climbed to 72,070 since the conflict between Hamas and Israel erupted on October 7, 2023, according to figures released Saturday by Gaza’s health authorities.

In addition to the fatalities, the authorities reported that 171,738 people have been injured since the outbreak of hostilities, underscoring the severe humanitarian toll of the prolonged conflict. The latest data reflects the cumulative impact of more than two years of sustained violence and military operations in the densely populated coastal enclave.

Health officials said that during the past 48 hours, one body and 10 wounded individuals were brought to hospitals across Gaza. The figures indicate that casualties continue to be recorded despite the implementation of a ceasefire last year.

According to the authorities, 612 Palestinians have been killed and 1,640 others wounded since a ceasefire came into effect in Gaza in October. While the truce was intended to reduce hostilities and facilitate humanitarian access, sporadic incidents and continued tensions have contributed to additional casualties in the months that followed.

The health authorities’ statement did not provide further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the latest fatalities and injuries. Hospitals and medical facilities in Gaza have faced sustained pressure throughout the conflict, grappling with shortages of medical supplies, damaged infrastructure, and limited access to essential resources.

The war, which began in October 2023, has significantly reshaped the humanitarian landscape in Gaza. Large segments of the population have been displaced, and critical infrastructure—including housing, healthcare facilities, and public utilities has sustained extensive damage.

International organizations have repeatedly expressed concern over the scale of civilian casualties and the broader humanitarian consequences of the fighting. Efforts to maintain and strengthen the ceasefire have continued amid calls for a more durable political resolution to the conflict.

The updated casualty figures highlight the ongoing human cost of the war, even in periods marked by relative calm. As tensions persist, the situation remains fragile, with health authorities continuing to document the cumulative toll on the population.

The latest report underscores the urgent need for sustained humanitarian support and renewed diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing further loss of life and stabilizing conditions in Gaza.
