Indian National Admits Role in Plot to Kill Sikh Leader in New York

Fresh confirmation has emerged of India’s involvement in overseas terrorism, after Indian national Nikhil Gupta admitted in a US federal court to conspiring to assassinate Sikh leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

According to media reports, Nikhil Gupta pleaded guilty during a hearing at a federal court in New York.

US prosecutors told the court that Gupta was in direct contact with an Indian government official who had assigned the assassination target. The prosecution said Gupta was part of a group operating under the Indian government that targeted overseas Sikh separatists.

Nikhil Gupta pleaded guilty during a hearing at a federal court in New York.

Media reports said that under US law, Gupta could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted on the charges.

It may be recalled that in June 2023, Khalistan movement leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed outside a gurdwara in Canada. Following that killing, a separate plot was hatched to assassinate Sikh leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in the United States, in which Nikhil Gupta was allegedly involved.

Nikhil Gupta was arrested in June 2023 from the Czech Republic and later deported to the United States, where he was formally charged after his extradition.

In this regard, a US prosecutor said the United States would not tolerate attempts to kill individuals on American soil.
