Iran Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Afghan Refugees Amid Drug-Related Executions
Iran has intensified measures against illegal Afghan refugees, following similar moves in countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom, and Turkiye, amid concerns over drug-related crimes and security challenges.
According to a report by Afghanistan International, seven prisoners, including Afghan nationals residing illegally in Iran, were executed at Qazvin Prison. The individuals had been sentenced to death by the Iranian judiciary for involvement in various drug-related offenses.
Human rights organizations report that 85 Afghan nationals were sentenced to death in Iran last year for serious crimes, highlighting the increasing crackdown on illicit activities among refugee populations.
Authorities in Iran have also accelerated deportation processes for illegal Afghan residents, citing concerns over criminal activity and adherence to immigration laws. The measures come as Tehran seeks to reinforce internal security and respond to pressures observed in other nations facing similar refugee-related challenges.
The crackdown underscores the complex intersection of immigration, security, and human rights in Iran, as the country balances law enforcement with international scrutiny.
