Iran-US Negotiations Underway in Muscat Amid Calls for Equality and Respect
Muscat: Negotiations between Iran and the United States are taking place today in Muscat, the capital of Oman, as both sides engage in renewed diplomatic efforts over Tehran’s nuclear program.
The Iranian delegation is being led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while the US side is represented by Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Ahead of the talks, Araghchi emphasized the need for mutual respect in dealings with Washington. In a statement shared on social media, he said Iran has entered diplomacy in good faith but will firmly defend its rights. He added that Tehran is negotiating with “open eyes,” drawing on the experiences of the past year.
The Iranian foreign minister stressed that honoring commitments is essential, noting that equality, mutual respect, and shared interests are not mere slogans but the foundation of any lasting agreement.
Meanwhile, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said the Iranian armed forces stand shoulder to shoulder with diplomats in defending the country. He described Araghchi as an experienced and strategic negotiator, adding that the foreign minister enjoys the full confidence of Iran’s top decision-makers, as well as the military and intelligence institutions.
Earlier, the talks were scheduled to be held in Türkiye, but Iran requested that the venue be shifted to Oman. Tehran had also sought to limit discussions strictly to nuclear issues and exclude regional partners, though it remains unclear whether these conditions were accepted.
