Japan Ruling Bloc Claims 323 Seats, Strengthening Takaichi’s Hold on Power
Tokyo : Japan’s ruling coalition has secured a decisive two-thirds majority in early parliamentary elections, according to official results and exit polls released on Sunday.
Voting was held for all 465 seats of the lower house of the Japanese parliament, with the conservative ruling alliance led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi emerging victorious.
Japanese state media exit polls indicated that the ruling coalition won 323 seats, comfortably crossing the two-thirds threshold required for a strong majority in the House of Representatives.
The landslide outcome has significantly strengthened Prime Minister Takaichi’s prospects of continuing in office and is expected to ease the passage of legislation in parliament.
Sanae Takaichi, 64, became Japan’s first female prime minister in October after being elected leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Her policy agenda includes measures aimed at curbing inflation, such as an eight percent reduction in the sales tax, alongside plans to increase military spending.
