Pakistan Calls for Stronger Global Commitment to UN Charter at Singapore Legal Conference
Pakistan has urged the international community to strengthen its commitment to international law, calling for a more consistent, courageous, and faithful application of the core principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
Addressing the International Law Year in Review 2026 Conference in Singapore, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, emphasized the importance of upholding the global legal order amid growing geopolitical tensions and unilateral actions that undermine international agreements.
In his remarks, Ambassador Ahmad drew specific attention to India’s unilateral decision to place the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) into abeyance, describing the move as illegal and contrary to established international obligations. He stressed that such actions weaken trust in international frameworks designed to manage disputes and protect regional stability.
The Pakistani envoy also advocated restraint in the use of force and underscored the urgent need for the better and fuller implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, arguing that selective or inconsistent enforcement erodes the credibility of the international system.
Pakistan’s intervention at the conference reaffirmed its position that lasting peace and stability depend on respect for international law, multilateralism, and the uniform application of global legal principles without exception or political selectivity.
