Pakistan Railways Invests Rs31 Billion in Major Network Upgrade
Islamabad : Pakistan Railways (PR) is investing over Rs31 billion in six major projects aimed at upgrading and rehabilitating the country’s railway network, officials announced on Saturday.
The projects, being carried out under the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP), are designed to improve safety standards, enhance operational efficiency, and provide faster and more reliable services to passengers and freight operators across the country, according to a document obtained by Wealth Pakistan.
The planned works include extensive track safety improvements on key railway sections. In the Sukkur Division, track safety projects on the Rohri to Khanpur section and Tando Adam to Rohri section are estimated to cost Rs4.87 billion and Rs4.83 billion respectively. In the Karachi Division, essential works on the Keamari to Hyderabad section will be carried out at a cost of Rs5.4 billion.
Meanwhile, in the Multan and Lahore divisions, track safety works on the Khanewal to Shahdara section, covering Shorkot, Faisalabad, and Qila Sheikhupura, are projected at Rs6.3 billion. In Multan Division, the Sher Shah to Kundian section will see improvements costing Rs4.9 billion, while in Sukkur Division, the Rohri to Sibi section will undergo safety upgrades at an estimated Rs5.49 billion.
Officials highlighted that the projects will not only make travel safer and more convenient but will also significantly reduce travel times. Upon completion, the Tando Adam to Rohri section is expected to save 55 minutes, Rohri to Khanpur 27 minutes, Keamari to Hyderabad 25 minutes, the Khanewal to Shahdara section 40 minutes, Rohri to Sibi 56 minutes, and Sher Shah to Kundian 106 minutes.
“These projects will streamline operations and improve the overall efficiency of Pakistan Railways, benefiting both passengers and freight operators nationwide,” the officials said.
