PM Shehbaz Reiterates Pakistan’s Support for UNESCO
ISLAMABAD: Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), H.E. Dr. Khaled El-Enany, called on Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Monday, with discussions focused on education reform, cultural heritage protection, and continued collaboration between Pakistan and UNESCO.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Minister for Science and Technology Khalid Hussain Magsi, Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khichi, along with senior government officials.
Congratulating Dr. El-Enany on his election as UNESCO Director General, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to UNESCO’s core values, particularly in promoting inclusive and quality education, preserving cultural heritage, and building resilience to global challenges.
The Prime Minister praised UNESCO’s ongoing initiatives worldwide and expressed Pakistan’s desire to further strengthen cooperation with the organization under Dr. El-Enany’s leadership.
Highlighting key government initiatives, Prime Minister Shehbaz drew attention to Pakistan’s “Education Emergency” programme, aimed at maximizing the enrollment of out-of-school children across the country. He also shared experiences and best practices from his tenure as Chief Minister of Punjab, noting the significant progress achieved in the education sector during that period.
The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with UNESCO’s support in protecting and preserving six cultural heritage sites in Pakistan and invited the organization to partner with Pakistan in nominating additional sites, including the Khewra Salt Mines, for international recognition.
Dr. El-Enany thanked the Prime Minister for the warm reception and said he had visited several schools and cultural sites during his short stay in Pakistan. He appreciated Pakistan’s achievements in the education sector and reaffirmed UNESCO’s continued commitment to supporting Pakistan in the fields of education, science, and culture.
