PM Shehbaz Sharif Highlights Global Crises, Urges Diplomacy at UN Event
NEW YORK: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the global crises facing the world, warning that unresolved political conflicts are turning situations into “powder kegs.”
Addressing a United Nations event on “Sustainable Development: Pathway to Global Peace and Prosperity,” the prime minister emphasized that diplomacy, dialogue, and negotiation remain the only means to prevent conflicts. He stressed that sustainable development must be grounded in justice and fairness, noting that without this, global peace would remain an unattainable goal.
Expressing concern over regional tensions, PM Shehbaz Sharif said that Pakistan’s neighbor had threatened to weaponize the Indus River water distribution system, which safeguards the livelihoods of Pakistan’s 240 million people.
He called for a stronger, well-resourced, and reformed United Nations to serve as a central pillar of global cooperation and maintain its role in promoting peace and development worldwide.
The prime minister also participated in a ceremony marking the signing of cooperation agreements between Pakistan and various UN agencies.
