Rossiya Airlines Operates Return Flights Only as Cuba Faces Fuel Crisis
Russia has started evacuating its citizens from Cuba as a severe jet fuel shortage, triggered by a US-imposed oil blockade, disrupts flights to the Caribbean island.
The Russian federal aviation regulator Rosaviatsia announced on Wednesday that Rossiya Airlines and Nordwind Airlines have been forced to adjust their flight schedules due to refueling difficulties in Cuba. Rossiya will operate return flights only — from Havana and Varadero to Moscow — to ensure the safe evacuation of roughly 4,000 to 5,000 Russian tourists reportedly stranded on the island.
Russia’s Ministry of Economic Development also urged its citizens not to travel to Cuba amid what is being described as the country’s worst fuel crisis in years. The shortage follows the US decision to cut off Venezuelan oil shipments to Cuba, compounding existing supply issues.
The Russian embassy in Havana is coordinating with national carrier Aeroflot and Cuban aviation authorities to ensure tourists return safely. Aeroflot has also announced repatriation flights, and Moscow reportedly plans to send humanitarian shipments of oil and petroleum products to support the island nation.
The situation has forced airlines to suspend or modify routes, and international travel to Cuba has been widely affected. The fuel shortage highlights the impact of external geopolitical pressures on the Caribbean nation’s aviation and energy sectors.
