Russian General Killed in Moscow Car Bomb as Ukraine Intensifies Strikes Inside Russia

A senior Russian military officer was killed in a car bomb explosion in Moscow yesterday, marking the third assassination of a high-ranking officer within a year. Russian investigators said they are considering the possibility that Ukrainian intelligence was responsible for the attack.

In separate incidents, Ukrainian forces struck multiple targets on Russian territory, including an oil terminal, a pipeline, two parked fighter jets and two ships, according to officials.

The latest attacks are part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to disrupt Russia’s war machinery and spread insecurity far from the battlefield. Ukrainian troops, facing numerical disadvantages, are struggling to contain Russia’s larger forces after nearly four years of fighting.

Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, 56, who headed the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, died from injuries sustained in the bombing, said Svetlana Petrenko, spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee.

“Investigators are examining several possible motives for the killing, including the involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services,” Petrenko said.

The strikes also appear aimed at weakening President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to project Russia as negotiating from a position of strength in US-led peace talks, which have so far failed to achieve progress on key issues.
