Shazia Marri Slams Nepra Decision, Calls Solar Policy Anti-People

Islamabad : Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Central Secretary Information Shazia Marri has strongly criticized the federal government over what she termed serious failures at Jinnah International Airport, Karachi, and an anti-public net metering policy introduced by the government without parliamentary consultation.

Addressing the media, she said federal agencies had demonstrated incompetence and inefficiency at Karachi airport, where passengers were facing severe hardship due to a lack of basic facilities. She maintained that immigration services and all operational arrangements at the airport fell under the responsibility of the federal government, not the provincial administration.

She pointed out that passengers were not even provided basic amenities such as trolleys, while delays at immigration and other checkpoints increased the likelihood of travelers missing their flights. She said disorder and mismanagement at Jinnah International Airport were a direct consequence of federal negligence, adding that instead of issuing explanations, the government should focus on resolving the issues.

Shazia Marri said the relevant federal minister had no clear response regarding the problems faced by the public at Karachi airport, calling the situation unacceptable at one of the country’s busiest international gateways. She added that public outrage had already exposed the gravity of the situation, and the PPP had raised the matter in parliament.

Turning to the net metering policy, she said the decision had triggered strong public reaction as well as serious concern within the PPP. She described the policy as fundamentally flawed and said it benefited only a small group while placing undue pressure on ordinary citizens and solar energy users.

She criticized the government for introducing the policy without bringing it before parliament for debate or referring it to the relevant committee. She questioned why stakeholders and the public were not taken into confidence and said repeated policy reversals had eroded public trust. She added that even leaders within the ruling party were openly criticizing the decision.

Highlighting global trends toward green energy, Shazia Marri said the government was discouraging renewable energy businesses by imposing excessive burdens, despite claims of promoting sustainable energy. She accused the government of targeting solar consumers and businesses, calling the policy punitive and unjustifiable.

She warned that if the government failed to cooperate and address these concerns, the PPP would consider staging a walkout. She said further decisions regarding the net metering issue would be taken at the party’s Central Executive Committee meeting, reiterating that the PPP would not remain silent on issues affecting the public.
