State Bank of Pakistan to Launch Newly Designed Currency Notes Pending Cabinet Approval

Islamabad, January 27, 2026 – The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) announced on Monday that it will begin printing newly designed currency notes of two to three different denominations once the federal cabinet approves the final designs.

Speaking at a press conference following the announcement of the latest monetary policy, SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad said the printing process was at an advanced stage and would commence soon after formal approval.

“The process of printing new-design banknotes is at an advanced stage. We will soon start printing, subject to cabinet approval. Two to three currency notes of different denominations will be printed simultaneously,” he stated.

Governor Ahmad explained that the redesigned notes would gradually enter circulation once the SBP builds the minimum required stock to replace existing notes in a phased manner. He did not, however, disclose which denominations would be introduced first. Currently, Pakistan’s currency includes notes of Rs. 10, Rs. 20, Rs. 50, Rs. 75, Rs. 100, Rs. 500, Rs. 1,000, and Rs. 5,000.

“The new designs have been sent to the government for approval and later forwarded to the cabinet,” Ahmad added.

Earlier this month, the Prime Minister’s Office stated that the federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, reviewed proposals for redesigning Pakistan’s currency notes and formed a committee to examine the matter in detail. The redesign process is being carried out in line with modern requirements and with the assistance of international experts.
