Syria Joins IRENA Talks, Nears Membership to Boost Renewable Energy Development
Abu Dhabi: Syria participated in the 16th session of the General Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi, with an official delegation led by Director General of the National Energy Research Center, Engineer Youssef Hassoun.
The Syrian Ministry of Energy said via its Telegram channel that the country is close to formally confirming its membership in IRENA.
The ministry described the move as a strategic step to support economic recovery and enhance Syria’s international engagement by reducing energy costs through the use of locally available renewable resources, developing modern sector policies, and opening channels for green financing. These measures, it added, would strengthen energy stability and lay the groundwork for sustainable development.
The 16th session of IRENA’s General Assembly, held last Sunday in Abu Dhabi, brought together ministers and representatives from 139 countries and the European Union, marking the first international energy-sector meeting of 2026.
