Syrian President, Macron Discuss Regional Stability, Ceasefire with SDF
Damascus: Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa held a telephone conversation on Saturday with French President Emmanuel Macron, during which the two leaders discussed regional developments and efforts to promote stability, according to an official statement.
Citing the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the statement said President Al-Sharaa stressed the importance of supporting the Syrian political process and strengthening stability across the country.
The talks also covered the comprehensive agreement reached between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). President Macron expressed support for the agreement and emphasized the need for its implementation in a way that safeguards Syria’s unity and sovereignty.
Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to continued coordination to support Syria and the Syrian people in moving toward stability, justice, and reconstruction.
On Friday, Damascus announced a comprehensive ceasefire and phased agreement with the SDF. Under the deal, both sides committed to an immediate ceasefire and a gradual process to integrate military and administrative structures.
The agreement includes the withdrawal of forces from contact lines and the deployment of Interior Ministry security forces to the city centers of Hasakah and Qamishli in northeastern Syria, as part of broader efforts to restore stability.
It also aims to unify Syrian territory, enforce state authority, and advance full institutional integration through coordination and joint efforts to rebuild the country.
The Syrian government and the SDF had previously signed a ceasefire and integration deal on January 18, but Damascus later accused the group of repeated and “serious” violations.
The latest agreement followed a Syrian Army military operation that reclaimed large areas in eastern and northeastern Syria after repeated breaches by the SDF of earlier understandings.
