Tehran Slams EU Over IRGC Terrorist Designation

Brussels/Tehran: The European Union has officially designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, EU foreign policy chief Kaia Kallas announced. The decision, approved by EU foreign ministers, marks a significant escalation in the bloc’s stance toward Tehran.

In response, Iran’s armed forces condemned the move as “illogical, irresponsible, and malicious,” describing it as blind alignment with “the dominant and inhumane policies of the U.S. and the Zionist regime.” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the designation a “major strategic mistake” by Europe.

Established after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the IRGC operates alongside Iran’s regular military under the direct authority of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The force, which comprises roughly 190,000 active personnel and over 600,000 including reserves, oversees Iran’s ballistic missile and nuclear programs, and exerts influence in regional conflicts through allied groups.

The move aligns the EU with the United States, which labeled the IRGC a foreign terrorist organization in 2019. Kallas stressed that governments must be held accountable for human rights violations, noting that those responsible for killing thousands cannot act with impunity.

Iran’s statement emphasized that the EU’s decision was “unreasonable and hostile,” and reflects undue influence from U.S. and Israeli policies.
