Trump Plans Temporary Shutdown of Kennedy Center for Major Overhaul
US President Donald Trump has announced plans to close the John F Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts for approximately two years, beginning in July, to carry out what he described as extensive renovation and rebuilding work.
The announcement, made on Sunday, follows a series of cancellations by prominent performers, musicians and artistic groups after Trump removed the centre’s previous leadership and added his name to the landmark institution. The president did not reference the recent cancellations in his statement.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he had determined that a temporary closure was the fastest way to elevate the venue’s standards.
“I have determined that the fastest way to bring The Trump Kennedy Center to the highest level of success, beauty, and grandeur is to cease entertainment operations for an approximately two-year period of time,” he wrote.
“The temporary closure will produce a much faster and higher quality result,” he added.
According to Trump, the closure is scheduled to begin on July 4, aligning with celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of US Independence Day. He noted that the decision remains subject to approval by the centre’s board, which he personally selected after assuming the role of chairman.
Trump said ongoing entertainment activities including concerts, operas, musicals, ballet performances and interactive arts programmes would slow down renovation and construction work, making a full temporary shutdown necessary.
“The DonaldTrump #KennedyCenter #USPolitics #PerformingArts #Culture #WashingtonDC #ArtsAndCulture #USNews #diplomatsWorld, if temporarily closed for construction, revitalization, and complete rebuilding, can be, without question, the finest performing arts facility of its kind anywhere in the world,” he stated.
He added that the renovated centre would become a landmark that Americans would take pride in for generations.
