Trump Signals Hope for Iran Deal Despite Khamenei’s Regional War Warning

Washington: Despite strong warnings from Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei about the risk of a wider regional conflict, US President Donald Trump has said he remains hopeful about reaching a deal with Tehran.

On Sunday, Ayatollah Khamenei cautioned that any US military action against Iran would trigger a war across the region. He dismissed US military posturing, saying repeated references by President Trump to deploying warships would not intimidate the Iranian nation.

“The Iranian people will neither be frightened nor pressured by such threats,” Khamenei said, adding that Iran does not seek to initiate conflict. However, he warned that any attack or intimidation against Iran would be met with a strong response.

Responding to Khamenei’s remarks, President Trump said he was optimistic about the prospects of an agreement with Iran. Addressing reporters, Trump said it was natural for the Iranian leader to speak of a regional war, noting that the outcome would depend on whether negotiations succeed.

“If talks fail, then we’ll see whether he was right or not,” Trump said, reiterating, “Hopefully, we can make a deal.”

The exchange comes amid an increased US naval presence in the Middle East. According to the US Navy, American forces currently deployed in the region include six destroyers, one aircraft carrier, and three littoral combat ships.
