Trump’s Foreign Policy Shifts Target Allies, Redefine Global Power Dynamics, Experts Say

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has reshaped global power dynamics, taking a more aggressive and muscular approach to foreign policy,One year after returning to office, according to experts.

Harvard’s Stephen Walt, speaking on media with Ian Bremmer, described Trump’s strategy as “predatory hegemony,” noting that while all great powers exert influence, Trump is unique in his willingness to apply military and economic pressure on US allies.

Walt emphasized that the speed and scope of changes under Trump have surprised observers. Measures include aggressive tariffs, heightened pressure on allied nations, and a readiness to use military force abroad. Meanwhile, rivals such as Russia and China face comparatively less hostility, highlighting a shift in US power asymmetry.

“This approach targets weaker countries while sparing strategic competitors, redefining how the United States engages internationally,” Walt said, underscoring the profound implications for the global order and long-standing alliances.

The analysis suggests that Trump’s policies, while following predictable themes, have introduced new dynamics into international relations, raising questions about the future balance of power and the role of the United States on the world stage.
