US Sends Additional Aircraft Carrier Amid Pressure on Iran
US President Donald Trump has announced the deployment of a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East as part of efforts to intensify pressure on Iran.
Speaking to the media while departing for a military base in North Carolina, President Trump said the United States wants to reach a deal with Iran and expects talks to succeed. He warned, however, that failure of negotiations would have serious consequences for Tehran.
President Trump said a change of power in Iran would be the best possible outcome, adding that Iranian authorities had spent the last 47 years making promises without delivering results.
He cautioned that the second aircraft carrier was being dispatched to the Middle East and said the naval fleet would be needed if Iran refused to conclude a nuclear agreement.
According to foreign media reports, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, is being moved from the Caribbean Sea to the Middle East, where it will join the US naval forces already stationed in the region.
The US carrier group led by the USS Abraham Lincoln, along with guided missile destroyers, has been deployed in the region for the past two weeks.
The announcement followed President Trump’s meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Meanwhile, Gulf Arab states have warned that any potential attack could trigger another major war in the region.
