John Whaite Says Muscular Build Saved His Life After Being Hit by Car
Strictly Come Dancing finalist and The Great British Bake Off star John Whaite has revealed he narrowly escaped death after being struck by a car in what he described as a “sudden and shocking” accident.
In an Instagram post shared Wednesday evening (January 7), the 36-year-old said the incident happened earlier this week when a vehicle hit him with enough force to send him onto the hood and windshield before he crashed onto the road.
“I rolled up the bonnet damaging it and the windscreen, before splatting onto the road and crawling to the pavement,” Whaite wrote.
He said a passerby immediately came to his aid, placing a coat over him and staying by his side until an ambulance arrived. Once hospitalized, doctors told Whaite the outcome could have been fatal if not for his muscular physique.
“The doctors said, ‘Thank God you’re 16 stone of muscle because it could have been fatal,’” he shared.
Whaite said he does not know how fast the driver was traveling but noted the impact was strong enough to throw him into the air. He reassured fans that he is recovering well and that doctors have carried out multiple tests to confirm he is stable and healthy.
The TV personality rose to wider fame in 2021 when he made history on Strictly Come Dancing by competing with professional dancer Johannes Radebe as the show’s first same-sex pairing. The duo finished as runners-up, losing the final to Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice.
Whaite thanked supporters for their concern and said he remains grateful to be alive following the terrifying ordeal.
