The United States has begun commemorating the 250th anniversary of its independence with a landmark celebration in Islamabad, highlighting two and a half centuries of democratic governance, innovation, economic progress, and international partnership while underscoring the growing strategic relationship between the United States and Pakistan.

Speaking at the U.S. Independence Day Reception in Islamabad, Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker described the anniversary as the most significant milestone in American history, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Addressing Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, senior government officials, diplomats, business leaders, and members of civil society, Baker reflected on the founding principles that shaped the United States and continue to inspire people around the world.

She noted that 250 years ago, fifty-six men gathered in Philadelphia to sign a document that introduced revolutionary ideas about freedom, equality, and self-governance. The Declaration of Independence affirmed that all people are created equal and possess unalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Baker said the anniversary celebrations are not only a reflection on America’s past but also an opportunity to look toward the future. She described the Declaration as a document whose ideals of dignity, freedom, and justice continue to resonate far beyond the United States.

The event also highlighted the achievements that have defined the United States over the past two and a half centuries. From the establishment of one of the world’s longest-standing constitutional democracies to breakthroughs in science, technology, medicine, education, and space exploration, the United States has played a major role in shaping the modern world.

American innovation has produced transformative advances in computing, telecommunications, healthcare, aerospace, and artificial intelligence. The country remains home to many of the world’s leading universities, research institutions, and global companies, helping drive economic growth and technological development across multiple sectors.

Baker emphasized that the 250th anniversary comes at a significant moment in U.S.-Pakistan relations. She said the partnership between the two countries has strengthened considerably in recent years and is increasingly based on mutual respect, shared interests, and cooperation across a range of strategic areas.

According to Baker, the relationship has expanded through increased engagement in trade, investment, security cooperation, diplomacy, education, and people-to-people exchanges. She praised the efforts of both governments in advancing bilateral cooperation and described Pakistan as an important strategic partner.

The senior American diplomat also highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic role in facilitating dialogue during a period of regional tensions. She pointed to Islamabad’s hosting of high-level discussions involving the United States and Iran earlier this year, describing the event as a significant diplomatic achievement that demonstrated Pakistan’s ability to contribute to regional stability and international engagement.

Baker further acknowledged Pakistan’s role in helping promote peace and stability in South Asia. She noted that diplomatic efforts by Pakistan’s leadership contributed to reducing tensions during a challenging period in the region, earning recognition from senior U.S. officials.

Beyond diplomacy and politics, Baker reflected on her experiences traveling across Pakistan. She praised the country’s hospitality, cultural diversity, and rich traditions, recalling visits to Lahore during the revival of the historic Basant festival and trips to communities across interior Sindh where agricultural and manufacturing cooperation supports local development.

The celebration also focused on sports as an important bridge between nations. Baker highlighted the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, as part of what American officials describe as a “Decade of Sport” that will also include the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.

She noted that Pakistan will play an important role in the global tournament through its internationally recognized football manufacturing industry. Footballs produced by Pakistani craftsmen will be used on some of the world’s biggest sporting stages, demonstrating the country’s contribution to international sports.

Baker also praised Pakistan’s passion for cricket and welcomed growing cooperation between American investors and Pakistan’s sports sector. She described sports as a powerful tool for bringing communities together and strengthening cultural connections between nations.

Thanking the Pakistani people for their hospitality and friendship, Baker said the United States views Pakistan as a country of significant potential, strategic importance, and growing international influence. She emphasized that both nations share a commitment to security, prosperity, and economic opportunity for their citizens.

As America approaches its historic 250th Independence Day on July 4, 2026, celebrations are taking place across the United States and at American diplomatic missions around the world. The anniversary serves as a tribute to the nation’s enduring democratic institutions, economic achievements, scientific innovations, and global partnerships.

Concluding her remarks, Baker expressed confidence that the future of U.S.-Pakistan relations remains bright, stating that the partnership is built on trust, strengthened by results, and guided by a shared vision for peace, stability, and prosperity. She said that as the United States enters its next chapter, the strongest days of the U.S.-Pakistan partnership may still lie ahead.
