Trump Threatens 100% Tariff on Canadian Goods Over Possible China Trade Deal
Washington:United States President Donald Trump has warned Canada of sweeping economic consequences if it enters into a trade agreement with China, threatening to impose a 100 percent tariff on all Canadian goods entering the United States.
In a statement issued on Saturday, President Trump said the United States would respond immediately with punitive trade measures if Ottawa proceeded with any commercial deal with Beijing. The warning was delivered through his social media platform, Truth Social, where he accused Canada of potentially acting as a transit hub for Chinese products entering the U.S. market.
Trump specifically targeted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, stating that if he believed Canada could become a “drop-off port” for China—allowing Chinese goods to flow into the United States through Canadian channelshe was “seriously mistaken.”
The U.S. president declared that any agreement between Canada and China would trigger an automatic response from Washington, with a 100 percent tariff imposed on all Canadian goods and products entering the American market, signaling a sharp escalation in trade tensions and protectionist policy enforcement.
