Pakistan Moves Toward 5G Launch Coordinating with Handset Makers

Islamabad – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated consultations with mobile phone manufacturers operating in the country as preparations for the launch of 5G services gain momentum. According to sources, the discussions aim to align the local handset ecosystem with upcoming 5G requirements and ensure device readiness ahead of the spectrum auction.

Currently, Pakistan hosts 36 mobile phone manufacturers, including both domestic and international brands, producing handsets for the local market. The PTA has requested feedback on the availability of 5G-compatible devices, production capacity, pricing, and timelines to facilitate a seamless rollout of next-generation mobile services.

Officials indicated that the government plans to hold the 5G spectrum auction by the end of February 2026. The auction is expected to significantly enhance high-speed connectivity, expand digital services, and support emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and smart applications across various sectors.

Early engagement with manufacturers is intended to address potential challenges related to device availability and consumer adoption. Coordinated planning between regulators, telecom operators, and handset producers is viewed as crucial to ensuring that 5G services are accessible to a broad segment of the population once launched.
