Shehbaz Sharif Signals Renewed Push for Polio-Free Pakistan with Global Support
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on today reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to completely eradicate polio, underscoring the government’s commitment to a nationwide, coordinated campaign backed by practical action and sustained political will.
In a meeting in Islamabad with Dr. Chris Elias, President of Global Development at the Gates Foundation, the prime minister said Pakistan is implementing a comprehensive strategy through an effective, well-coordinated team to eliminate the disease once and for all.
He expressed deep appreciation for the support and collaboration of philanthropist Bill Gates and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Pakistan’s long-running fight against polio, noting that international partnerships remain critical to success.
While acknowledging the significant progress made in recent years, the prime minister stressed that emergency measures are still required to address remaining challenges. He said the federal government is working in full coordination with provincial authorities to ensure the safe and unhindered access of polio vaccination teams across the country under an effective national strategy.
Shehbaz Sharif further stated that key projects related to the polio eradication campaign under the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) will continue nationwide, ensuring sustained financial and institutional support for the initiative.
Dr. Chris Elias praised the prime minister’s personal leadership and attention to the polio eradication drive, commending the measures taken by the government. He acknowledged that Pakistan is moving in the right direction toward complete eradication of the virus and that progress is advancing toward success.
He also reaffirmed the Gates Foundation’s commitment to continued constructive engagement and consultation with federal and provincial governments, as well as relevant institutions, to support Pakistan’s goal of becoming polio-free.
