Pakistan Targets $6–8 Billion Mineral Exports with China Partnership, Says Ahsan Iqbal

Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal has highlighted Pakistan’s potential to increase mineral exports to $6–8 billion annually within this decade through strategic value addition.

Speaking at the Pak–China Mineral Cooperation Forum in Islamabad, he stressed the country’s objective to move beyond mere extraction, focusing instead on developing mineral processing plants, smelters, refining facilities, and mineral-based industrial clusters linked to Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

“The transformation of Pakistan’s mineral economy cannot happen without strategic partners, and China’s role is central in this regard,” Ahsan Iqbal said. He emphasized that the future of Pakistan-China mineral cooperation lies in co-creating value through technology, innovation, human capital development, and long-term partnerships. With China as a trusted partner, Pakistan can convert its mineral wealth into industrial strength, export competitiveness, and shared prosperity.

The planning minister also highlighted that Pakistan seeks joint ventures designed not only to meet domestic demands but also to serve regional and global markets. He reaffirmed that the security and safety of Chinese nationals and investments in Pakistan remain a top national priority.

Ahsan Iqbal further outlined that the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) focuses on translating connectivity into productivity, productivity into exports, and exports into jobs and sustainable growth. He expressed hope that CPEC phase two would help modernize Pakistan’s agriculture, industries, technology, and human resource capacity, positioning the country as a model of export-led growth.

Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik added that with China’s support, Pakistan is establishing itself as a reliable long-term partner in the global mineral supply chain. He invited Chinese companies, service providers, and equipment suppliers to deepen engagement in Pakistan’s mineral sector to create mutually beneficial partnerships.
