Musadik Malik Highlights Wetlands’ Role in Livelihoods and Climate Action

Islamabad: Federal Minister for Climate Change Dr. Musadik Malik emphasized the critical role of wetlands during his remarks on World Wetlands Day, underlining their importance not only for environmental protection but also for public livelihoods.

Dr. Malik stated that wetlands are home to millions of families who depend on them for survival and income, highlighting that these resources belong to 99 percent of the population rather than the elite. He stressed that wetlands and trees provide both ecological balance and employment opportunities, and that the destruction of these resources directly impacts ordinary citizens’ economies.

The minister further pointed out that trees and wetlands serve as the largest natural carbon sinks, helping to absorb carbon emissions and mitigate global warming. He warned that rapid glacier melting due to climate change is triggering natural disasters, making wetland preservation crucial.

According to Dr. Malik, protecting wetlands is essential for effectively combating global warming, and sustainable management of these ecosystems is vital for both environmental conservation and the livelihoods of dependent communities.
