Pakistan’s 240 Wetlands Vital for Marine Conservation, Coastal Protection
Islamabad: Maritime Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry highlighted the critical role of wetlands in protecting the Arabian Sea, conserving marine biodiversity, and supporting Pakistan’s blue economy.
In a message on the occasion of World Wetlands Day, the minister emphasized that wetlands—including mangroves, estuaries, tidal flats, and coastal lagoons—serve as a frontline defence against climate change impacts such as flooding, coastal erosion, and sea-level rise.
Pakistan is home to over 240 significant wetlands, with some studies identifying 225 specifically. These ecosystems cover an estimated 10 percent of the country’s total land area. “These ecosystems act as natural buffers that protect coastal communities, ports, and infrastructure while maintaining water quality and ecological balance in marine environments,” said Minister Junaid Anwar.
