Trump Reaffirms Opposition to Iranian Nuclear Weapons as Talks Continue
US President Donald Trump has confirmed that a next round of negotiations with Iran will take place following what he described as a positive first round of talks.
Speaking to reporters, President Trump said the initial discussions with Iran, held on Friday, produced encouraging results. He stated that Iran is seeking an agreement with the United States and confirmed that further negotiations are scheduled for next week.
The US president added that Iran appears far more prepared to move forward now than it was a year and a half ago. At one point during his remarks, Trump reiterated that he does not want to see Iran acquire nuclear weapons.
Talks between the United States and Iran were held on Friday in Muscat, the capital of Oman.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had earlier said that both sides agreed to continue negotiations, noting that officials from both countries would first return to their respective capitals for consultations.
According to US media reports, Washington is seeking a complete halt to Iran’s uranium enrichment activities and limits on the production of ballistic missiles.
