China Cautions U.S. on Taiwan Arms Sales, Says Trump Visit Could Be Affected

China has warned the United States that arms sales to Taiwan could put President Donald Trump’s planned visit to China at risk, according to foreign media reports.

Beijing cautioned that the sale of weapons to Taiwan could negatively impact President Trump’s upcoming trip, which is reportedly scheduled for April.

The warning follows a recent telephone conversation between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which the U.S. president described as “excellent.” In a statement issued after the call, President Trump said the two leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including trade, military affairs, Taiwan, the Russia–Ukraine conflict, and the current situation involving Iran.

President Trump also said discussions covered China’s potential purchases of U.S. oil, gas, additional agricultural products, and the delivery of aircraft engines, among other matters.

Chinese media reported that President Xi, during the conversation, emphasized the importance of the Taiwan issue in U.S.-China relations. The Chinese leader urged the United States to exercise extreme caution regarding arms agreements with Taiwan.
