Trump Threatens to Block Gordie Howe Bridge Over Canada Trade Dispute

WASHINGTON : US President Donald Trump has threatened to prevent the opening of the $4.7 billion Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Michigan and Ontario, escalating tensions with Canada over trade.

Trump argued that the United States should own “at least half” of the under-construction bridge, which has been entirely financed by Canada. Work on the project began in 2018, and the bridge named after the late Canadian-born hockey legend Gordie Howe is scheduled to open later this year.

“I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the fairness and respect that we deserve,” Trump posted on Truth Social, adding that negotiations would begin immediately.

The US leader criticized Canada for using “virtually no US products” in the bridge’s construction and for controlling both sides of the crossing. According to the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, the bridge is financed entirely by Canada and will be jointly owned by Canada and the state of Michigan.

Trump also raised concerns over Canada’s recent preliminary trade deal with China, suggesting Washington could be left with the “leftovers,” and repeated his previous, controversial claims about Canadian ice hockey.

Relations between Washington and Ottawa have been strained since Trump returned to office in January 2025, with trade disputes and previous calls for the US to annex Canada contributing to ongoing tensions.
