Five Palestinians Killed in Gaza as US-Brokered Truce Faces Strain

CAIRO : Israeli airstrikes and gunfire killed five Palestinians in Gaza on Tuesday, health officials said, marking the latest escalation that has undermined the four-month-old US-brokered truce in the enclave.

In Deir Al-Balah in central Gaza, an airstrike hit two people riding an electric bike, killing both, according to medics. Later, Israeli drone fire struck a woman in the same area, while troops shot dead a man in Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Another man was killed by Israeli gunfire in Jabalia in northern Gaza.

The violence followed an incident on Monday in Rafah, where Israeli forces killed four militants after they emerged from an underground tunnel and opened fire on troops.

While Israel did not directly comment on Tuesday’s fatalities, its military said it had conducted operations targeting what it described as Hamas militants in response to the Rafah attack.

In Gaza City, dozens of Palestinians attended funerals for three people killed in an Israeli airstrike on an apartment building on Monday night. Observers noted that one body was wrapped in a Hamas green flag, and another had a green Hamas ribbon on the forehead, indicating their affiliation with the militant group.
