Government Moves to Safeguard Existing Solar Power Contracts

Islamabad : Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has taken immediate notice of the new solar power regulations issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), directing the Power Division to seek a formal review to ensure full protection of existing consumer contracts.

Chairing a high-level special meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday, the prime minister instructed the Power Division to file an urgent appeal with Nepra, emphasizing that the rights and contractual guarantees of current solar consumers must be safeguarded to the maximum extent possible.

The prime minister further directed the Power Division to formulate a comprehensive policy framework to ensure that the financial burden of solar power users does not fall disproportionately on electricity consumers who rely solely on the national grid. He noted that while approximately 466,000 consumers benefit from solar energy, the interests of over 37.6 million grid-dependent electricity users must also be protected.

The meeting was convened specifically to review Nepra’s newly issued solar regulations and assess their broader implications for the power sector.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Federal Ministers Ahsan Khan Cheema, Attaullah Tarar, Ali Pervaiz Malik, Sardar Owais Khan Leghari, Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kayani, Adviser on Privatization Muhammad Ali, and senior officials from relevant departments attended the session.
