US House Votes to End Trump’s Canada Tariffs in GOP Rebellion

The United States House of Representatives voted Wednesday to advance a bill that would roll back President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada, marking a rare public break by Republican lawmakers from the Trump administration.

The final vote was 219 in favor and 211 against, with several Republicans crossing party lines to side with Democrats. The measure would end Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose tariffs on Canadian imports. The Republican Party holds a 218-seat majority in the House, making the outcome a notable challenge to Trump’s influence.

Democrats pressed Republicans to defy the president. “Today’s vote is simple, very simple: Will you vote to lower the cost of living for the American family or will you keep prices high out of loyalty to one person, Donald J. Trump?” said Representative Gregory Meeks of New York, who authored the resolution.

The vote comes as the US heads into the midterm election season, with primaries beginning in March and the general election scheduled for November. All House members will face voters in their respective districts.

Republicans supportive of ending the tariffs are balancing the risk of alienating Trump with the potential electoral consequences of backing unpopular policies. Trump has threatened to undermine the election prospects of any Republican who voted in favor of the bill.

The House action signals growing independence among some members of Congress as they navigate Trump’s enduring influence over the party.
