Iran affirms nuclear rights, rejects weapon negotiations

Tehran: Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi addressed the United Nations Conference on Disarmament, affirming that the peaceful use of nuclear energy is an inalienable right of Iran that is not open to negotiation.

Araqchi emphasized that nuclear weapons pose the greatest threat to humanity. He stressed that Iran has always pursued peaceful nuclear energy and has no intention of acquiring nuclear arms. He further stated that attacks on secure nuclear facilities constitute a war crime.

The Iranian foreign minister criticized the lack of clear condemnation from the UN Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), describing it as a dangerous precedent. He reiterated that Iran will continue to cooperate with the IAEA under a comprehensive safeguards system on fully technical and impartial terms.

Araqchi noted that certain Western countries, particularly the United States, are undermining the negotiation process. He added that detailed technical discussions were held with IAEA Director Rafael Grossi to maintain ongoing technical cooperation, including the agency’s potential role between Iran and the United States.

Meanwhile, Araqchi announced that the second round of indirect nuclear talks with the United States in Geneva reached general agreement on guiding principles, showing better progress than the first round.
