One Battle After Another, BAFTA Awards

LONDON : Political thriller One Battle After Another emerged as the biggest winner at the EE British Academy Film Awards, taking home six prizes including best picture and building momentum ahead of next month’s Oscars.

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the film follows a group of revolutionaries locked in chaotic conflict with the state. In addition to best picture, it secured awards for directing, adapted screenplay, cinematography, and editing. Sean Penn** also won for his supporting role as an obsessive military officer.

Accepting the directing prize, Anderson described the recognition as “overwhelming and wonderful.” He paid tribute to longtime assistant director Adam Somner, who died of cancer in November 2024 shortly after production began. Quoting singer Nina Simone, Anderson said, “I know what freedom is: It’s no fear,” urging filmmakers to continue creating boldly.

Sinners, Frankenstein Share Major BAFTA Wins

Blues-infused vampire epic Sinners and gothic horror reimagining Frankenstein each claimed three awards. “Sinners” won for original screenplay by director Ryan Coogler, musical score, and supporting actress for Wunmi Mosaku, who portrayed herbalist Annie. Mosaku said the role helped her reconnect with her heritage and identity.

Shakespearean drama Hamnet secured two honors, including best British film. Jessie Buckley won best actress for her portrayal of Agnes Hathaway, wife of William Shakespeare. Buckley became the first Irish performer to claim the category at the BAFTAs, dedicating her award to women “past, present and future.”

In a surprise victory, Robert Aramayo won best actor for his role in fact-based indie drama I Swear, centered on advocacy for people with Tourette syndrome. Aramayo called his win over nominees including Ethan Hawke, Michael B. Jordan, Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet “absolutely mad.”

The ceremony, held at Royal Festival Hall, drew Hollywood stars and British celebrities. Host Alan Cumming presided over the black-tie event, which was attended by Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales. William presented an award in his capacity as president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

The awards are widely viewed as an indicator for the upcoming Academy Awards. “Sinners” leads Oscar nominations with 16, followed by “One Battle After Another” with 13.

Royalty and Stars Gather at BAFTAs

In other categories, Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value won best film not in English. “Frankenstein” was recognized for production design, costume design, and hair and makeup, transforming Jacob Elordi into the iconic creature.

The best documentary award went to Mr. Nobody Against Putin, directed by David Borenstein, which chronicles a Russian teacher documenting propaganda in schools after the invasion of Ukraine.

With a mix of political themes and cinematic spectacle, this year’s BAFTAs reflected an industry grappling with global tensions while celebrating creative achievement.
