BEIJING: China on Monday urged an immediate ceasefire and renewed diplomatic engagement to end the escalating conflict in the Middle East, as hostilities stretched into a third consecutive day.

China Urges Ceasefire as Mideast Conflict Deepens

Israel and the United States have been carrying out strikes on Iran and Lebanon, with the violence spreading to neighboring states across the region.

“The most urgent task is an immediate cessation of military operations and preventing a spread and spillover of conflict,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told a regular news conference. She emphasized the need for “a resolution through dialogue and negotiation.”

Beijing Calls for Dialogue Amid Regional Escalation

Mao confirmed that one Chinese citizen was killed in Tehran as a result of the ongoing strikes. Israel and the United States have been conducting operations in the Iranian capital in an offensive that killed the Islamic republic’s supreme leader.

“The foreign ministry has instructed the Chinese embassy in Iran to provide assistance to the individual involved and the family,” Mao said, without disclosing further details about the victim or the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The escalating hostilities have drawn in multiple regional actors. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have vowed to launch what they described as the “most ferocious” operation in history against Israel and US bases in the region. Several Gulf countries have already reported casualties and damage following a series of deadly Iranian strikes.

China reiterated its call for restraint by all parties, urging efforts to prevent further escalation and wider regional instability. Officials stressed that diplomatic channels remain essential to restoring stability and safeguarding civilians.

Beijing has maintained that dialogue and negotiated solutions are the only viable path to ending the conflict and avoiding a broader crisis in the Middle East.
