France Deploys Rafale Jets to Protect UAE Bases

France has deployed Rafale fighter jets over the United Arab Emirates to safeguard its naval and air installations against potential Iranian attacks, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Tuesday. The move follows a series of drone incidents targeting facilities in the Gulf region amid escalating tensions.

Drone Strike Hits French Facility in Emirates

According to Barrot, the Rafale aircraft are stationed at Al-Dhafra base near Abu Dhabi, where France maintains a military presence. France has several hundred navy, air force and army personnel deployed in the UAE as part of longstanding defense cooperation arrangements.

“These Rafales and their pilots are mobilized to ensure the security of our facilities,” Barrot told broadcaster BFMTV in response to a question regarding French action over the weekend to neutralize Iranian drones. He confirmed that the aircraft had conducted operations aimed at securing the airspace above French bases in the Emirates.

Barrot disclosed that on Sunday, a hangar at a French base in the United Arab Emirates was struck by a drone. He did not provide further operational details but indicated that efforts were underway to assess the damage and enhance defensive measures.

“Exchanges are multiplying to determine both how the country can defend itself against future attacks and how France can protect its interests there,” Barrot said, referring to ongoing discussions with Emirati authorities and defense partners.

France’s aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, was not redirected to the Mediterranean in response to the developments, Barrot clarified. He said the vessel was operating in the North Atlantic as part of a previously scheduled multinational exercise and, to his knowledge, had not altered its course.

Regional Escalation Impacts Oil, Technology Infrastructure

The deployment comes amid heightened regional instability following coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran on Saturday. The attacks resulted in the killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, according to reports. Iran has since responded by targeting US allies across the Gulf region.

In the UAE, debris from a drone interception sparked a fire in an oil industry zone in the emirate of Fujairah on Tuesday, authorities said. The blaze was contained without major reported disruption.

In Abu Dhabi, a drone struck a fuel tank terminal on Monday, causing a fire. Officials stated that operations at the facility were not impacted despite the incident.

The technology sector was also affected. US-based company Amazon said late Monday that two of its data centers in the UAE were directly struck by drones. The company reported disruptions to cloud services in parts of the Middle East following the incidents.

The series of drone attacks and interceptions has underscored the vulnerability of both military and civilian infrastructure in the region. French authorities have reiterated their commitment to protecting personnel and assets stationed in the UAE while coordinating closely with regional partners.
