Pakistan Preparations for Upcoming 5G Spectrum Auction
Pakistan has finalized preparations for the long-awaited auction of fifth-generation (5G) spectrum, with authorities announcing that the formal process will begin following an inaugural ceremony scheduled for March 10 at 9:00 a.m.
Telecom Operators to Participate in Multi-Band Spectrum Auction
According to official details, the opening ceremony will mark the formal launch of the 5G spectrum auction process, which is expected to play a significant role in the development of next-generation mobile communication services in the country.

Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja will address the inaugural ceremony. Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Major General (Retired) Hafeez ur Rehman, will also deliver remarks during the event.
During the ceremony, the Director General of Wireless Licensing will provide a detailed briefing regarding the spectrum auction, outlining the framework, frequency bands, and procedures that will be used for the bidding process.
Clock Auction Method to Determine Allocation of 5G Spectrum
Officials stated that the formal auction will commence immediately after the conclusion of the opening ceremony. The auction will involve a total of 597 megahertz (MHz) of spectrum, which will be offered to telecom operators for deployment of advanced mobile services, including 5G connectivity.

The 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz frequency bands are being regarded as the most important for the rollout of 5G services in Pakistan. These bands are widely used internationally for high-capacity and high-speed mobile broadband services and are considered critical for enabling next-generation wireless technologies.
In addition to these key bands, the auction will also include spectrum in the 700 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, and 2300 MHz frequency ranges. These bands are expected to support a range of telecommunications services and enhance network capacity and coverage across the country.

Officials confirmed that three mobile network operators will participate in the spectrum auction. The participating companies will be able to join the auction process remotely, allowing them to place bids online from their respective offices.
Opening Ceremony for 5G Spectrum Auction Scheduled March 10
The bidding process will follow a “clock auction” format, a method commonly used for spectrum allocations around the world. In this system, prices for spectrum blocks gradually increase in multiple rounds until the available spectrum is allocated to the highest bidders.

Authorities noted that the auction will be conducted through specialized software designed to manage the multi-round bidding process efficiently and transparently. The system will allow operators to participate in successive bidding rounds until the spectrum allocation is finalized.

Under the auction rules, each telecom operator will be required to acquire a minimum of 100 MHz of spectrum. This requirement is intended to ensure that operators obtain sufficient spectrum capacity to effectively deploy and operate 5G networks.
The spectrum auction is considered a key step toward expanding Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and enabling advanced telecommunications services across the country.
