Pakistan’s Federal Debt Rises by PKR 573 Billion in One Month, SBP Data Shows
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reported that as of November 25, the federal government’s total debt stood at PKR 77,543 billion, up from PKR 76,970 billion on November 24, reflecting a one-month increase of PKR 573 billion.
Over the past year, the government’s total debt grew by PKR 7,178 billion. On November 24 of last year, total federal debt was PKR 70,365 billion.
The SBP noted that domestic debt rose by PKR 653 billion over the month, reaching PKR 54,619 billion on November 25, marking an annual increase of PKR 6,035 billion from PKR 48,584 billion.
Meanwhile, external debt decreased slightly over the month, with the government paying PKR 79 billion, bringing total external debt to PKR 22,925 billion on November 25, up from PKR 21,780 billion a year earlier. In comparison, external debt on October 25 stood at PKR 23,004 billion.
During the first five months of the current fiscal year, the government’s total debt fell by PKR 345 billion. In the same period, external debt decreased by PKR 492 billion, while domestic debt increased by PKR 147 billion.
