US, NATO Review Security Developments in Greenland and Arctic

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on Sunday to discuss the security situation in Greenland and the wider Arctic region.

In a post on the social media platform X, Rutte said the two leaders would continue working on the issue and added that he looked forward to meeting President Trump in Davos later this week.

Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has long drawn US attention because of its strategic location and vast mineral resources. Concerns have also been raised in Washington about increasing Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic region.

In a recent move, President Trump announced on Saturday that the United States would impose a 10 percent tariff on goods imported from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland starting February 1. The tariffs are set to rise to 25 percent in June.

Trump said the measures were linked to opposition from these countries to US control of Greenland.

Following the announcement, European leaders, including the presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, pledged a coordinated response to the US decision.
