Federal Minister Criticizes Government Business Ventures, Calls for Economic Documentation

Karachi: Federal Privatization Minister Muhammad Ali has criticized the government’s involvement in commercial activities, saying that running businesses with taxpayers’ money is not the role of the state.

Speaking to the media in Karachi, the minister highlighted that a large part of Pakistan’s economy remains undocumented, contributing to corruption. He added that the country’s tax system cannot function properly until the economy is fully documented, stressing that documenting Pakistan’s economy is not an impossible task.

Muhammad Ali further noted that Pakistan is essentially a province of 100 million people, where the salaried class bears the brunt of taxation, while tax revenues are being used to cover government losses rather than productive purposes.

Former Finance Minister Miftah Ismail commented that Pakistan’s economic challenges are not due to bad politicians but rather because the political structure itself is flawed. Former finance minister Asad Umar added that relying solely on garment exports cannot drive the country forward, noting that Pakistan is not producing goods aligned with global demand.
